They suffer more extremely in the present economic crisis. Many smaller farms have to close down. The trend that many young and educated people leave the region and only very few return is continuing. The consequence is that more and more small villages become unsustainable – shops close, services discontinue. Following the workshop at the VI Congress of the Portuguese Agricultural Economics Association and IV Congress of Environmental Management and Sustainability in Ponta Delgada, Portugal on July 16, 2009 we would like you to join this international discussion on how to make our beautiful regions in Europe more lively and exciting.
